It is too heavy and expensive to transport building materials to space, and isn’t practical for humans to build in such weather. So a team of engineers have designed robots that use local materials to build structures. These structures can last through such harsh weather, like radiation from the sun and micrometeorites. The soil on Mars is ideal for creating bricks, or we may have a tendency to live underground in caves or volcanic rock tubes. Martian volcanic rock tubes are volcanic caverns on mars. NASA building plans will mirror a trailer park of interconnected homes. The systems might include; housing units, storehouses for food, leisure spaces and other necessities for survival. Module robots will be used to build these shelters. Three robots have already been developed for the use of building on Mars: Axle rovers, Space Exploration Vehicle and the Roborats. The prime problem with these robots are communication. To send a command from Earth to the robots on Mars is a 20-minute hold off. The Axel robotic has independent wheels, so its use would be to gather water and rocks for evaluation.
But when we get there it will take a while to build structures on mars. Robert Bigelow, created his billions from the building chain Budget Suites of America, formally launched a brand new space travel company known as “Bigelow space Operations”. Bigelow, age 72, supported Bigelow Aerospace in 1999. That company develops space hardware and engineered an inflatable area, known as the Bigelow Expandable Activity Module, that NASA hooked up to the International Space Station in 2016.
Their basic idea is that it is much cheaper to launch habitats folded up to a fraction of their size, and then inflate them in space, their would also be more room than if you live inside a traditional space metal hull. So far the company has become very successful as they have an amazing track record. It has launched many working prototypes into space, the latest of which is the BEAM that is attached to the international space station. These inflatable areas will be the ideal habit for a long duration space mission, as they will be equipped with two galleys, two toilets, enormous cargo space and two dissimilar propulsion systems.
There are 3 decks. The lower deck is for team participants sleeping, storage and entertainment. The middle deck is for science experiments, cold storage for food, workstations, galleys, and growing food. And the higher deck is for clinical use and exercise.
But how would we inflate them? Well the hatch of the B330 contains around a dozen large air tanks, which will then release their gases to inflate the final B330 to its full operational size, once in space. Bigelow is interested in helping NASA with both desires the use of the B330.
Artemis currently calls for housing astronauts inside a moon-orbiting area station referred to as the Gateway. That way, there’d be a helpful pit stop between the lunar floor and Earth. In the distant future, the Gateway might also function a stepping stone to Mars.
